The basics
What a visa run actually is
A visa run means leaving Vietnam and coming straight back in to reset your allowed stay. If you are living in Da Lat on a tourist visa or visa exemption, you have a limited number of days. When those days run out, you need to exit the country and re-enter to get a fresh stamp.
The closest border checkpoint from Da Lat is Moc Bai, right on the Cambodian border in Tay Ninh province. You drive out of Vietnam, cross into Cambodia, and walk right back through immigration on the Vietnam side. Total time at the border is usually under an hour. The drive takes most of the day, which is why we leave before dawn.

Day-of timeline
What a Da Lat visa run looks like hour by hour
Pickup in Da Lat
Your driver arrives at your hotel or apartment. The car is a private sedan or SUV with blankets, water, and snacks. You settle in and the mountain road starts winding down QL20.
Bao Loc pickup
If you are coming from Bao Loc or Di Linh, this is your window. The driver pulls off QL20 at the agreed meet point. Quick coffee stop nearby if anyone needs one.
Highway to HCMC ring road
The road flattens out after the mountains. You pass through farmland, rubber plantations, and scattered towns. The driver calls ahead to the fixer team at Moc Bai so they know your ETA.
Arrive at Moc Bai border
The car pulls into the Vietnam-side parking area. Your fixer meets you there and walks you to the Vietnam immigration window. You get your exit stamp in about 10 minutes if the line is short.
Cross into Cambodia (Bavet)
Walk across the bridge. On the Cambodian side, you fill out a short arrival form and pay the Cambodia visa fee in USD. The whole process takes 15-20 minutes. Keep your Cambodia entry slip handy for when you come back out.
Cambodia exit + Vietnam re-entry
Walk back through Cambodian exit, then line up at Vietnam immigration on the same building. Your fixer hands your passport to the officer. You get a new arrival stamp with a fresh visa or exemption period. If you ordered the 90-day E-Visa add-on, the fixer checks whether it has come through yet before you queue.
Back in the car
Passport stamped, visa sorted. You walk back to the parking lot and the driver heads toward Tay Ninh city for lunch. There is a good noodle spot and a coffee place the drivers know.
Lunch in Tay Ninh
Hot meal, cold drink, bathroom break. Tay Ninh is the only proper stop on the way back. If you want, the driver can swing by the Cao Dai Temple for a quick look.
Return drive to Da Lat
Same highway in reverse. The afternoon sun makes the mountain stretch scenic. Most people nap or scroll. Arrival back in Da Lat is between 19:00 and 21:00 depending on traffic around HCMC.

How the Moc Bai crossing works
Moc Bai is a straightforward land border. Thousands of trucks and buses cross here daily, so the immigration staff process tourists quickly. Here is the flow:

Heads up
Do not lose the Cambodia entry slip they give you at Bavet. You need to hand it back when you walk out of Cambodia. Without it, the exit counter holds you up while they dig through their records.
Your choices
Sleeper bus + car or private car
There are two ways to get from Da Lat to Moc Bai and back. Which one fits depends on your budget and how much you value your sleep.
Sleeper bus + car combo
Take an overnight sleeper bus from Da Lat to HCMC the night before. A private car picks you up at the bus station in HCMC and drives you to Moc Bai. This is the cheaper option.

Private car (direct)
A private car picks you up at your door in Da Lat before dawn and drives you all the way to Moc Bai and back. No transfers, no waiting for buses.

Visas
What happens to your visa on the run
There are two common scenarios based on the type of stay you have:
You have a valid visa
You leave Vietnam, the old visa is used. When you come back, you get a new arrival date. If your visa is single-entry, you need a new one before re-entering. Our 90-day E-Visa add-on handles the paperwork.
You are on a visa exemption
You get a certain number of days on entry (typically 15, 30, or 45 days depending on your passport). When you exit and re-enter, the clock resets. Some nationalities can do this repeatedly without a formal visa.

Things that trip people up
Passport validity under 6 months
Vietnam will not let you in if your passport expires within 6 months. Check the date before you book. If it is close, get it renewed first.
14-day or 30-day exemption boundaries
If you are from a country with a short exemption period, overstaying even one day means a fine at the border. Count your days carefully or go for the 90-day visa.
Losing the Cambodia entry slip
Mentioned above but it is worth repeating. The slip is a small piece of paper and easy to lose in your pocket or bag. Tuck it into your passport until you are back on the Vietnam side.
Leaving too late
If your car departs Da Lat after 05:30, you hit HCMC rush hour around 07:30-08:00. That adds 30 to 60 minutes. The earlier you go, the smoother the drive.
Not enough buffer on the visa expiry
If your current visa expires the day of the run, you are cutting it fine. Immigration can flag the exit stamp if you overstay, even by a few hours. Aim to go at least 2-3 days before your visa expires.
