Visa run from Da Lat: Moc Bai, Kuala Lumpur or Bangkok

The real numbers for transport, the Cambodia visa, and the 90-day E-Visa add-on. In VND and USD.

Three real choices

Da Lat has no border of its own. That is the whole problem, and it is why there is more than one answer to this. You can drive to the Cambodian border at Moc Bai, or you can fly out of Lien Khuong or Cam Ranh and come back a few days later. Both reset your stay. They cost different amounts and they ask different things of you.

This page compares the three options that actually work in 2026, with the government fees separated from what an agent charges, so you can see what you are paying for and to whom.

The three options at a glance

Option Time door to door Transport cost Best for
Moc Bai by land Most of a day, or overnight each way by sleeper bus 2,500,000 to 6,000,000 VND Anyone who wants it done in one trip without flying
Fly to Kuala Lumpur Half a day of travel, plus at least one night abroad Airfare, varies by season People who would rather not sit in a car for 600 km
Fly to Bangkok Half a day of travel, plus at least one night abroad Airfare, varies by season People combining the reset with a few days away

Laos is technically a fourth option and almost nobody uses it from Da Lat. The Lao Bao and Cau Treo crossings are the better part of 700 km away, which makes the drive longer than the Cambodia run for no gain.

Option 1: the land run to Moc Bai

Moc Bai sits about 300 km from Da Lat, on the Cambodian border in Tay Ninh province. The loop runs down QL20 through Bao Loc, across the farmland, and back. It is the cheapest option and the only one that finishes the same day.

Sleeper bus + car

2,500,000 VND

from Da Lat to Ho Chi Minh City overnight, then a car to the border. Leaves in the evening and returns the following evening.

Private car

6,000,000 VND

per car, seats up to four. Leaves early morning and is back the same evening. From three people upwards it beats the bus on cost per head.

This is the option almost everyone in Da Lat chooses, because it needs no flight, no hotel and no days off. The trade is a long day in a vehicle.

Full detail sits on the cost breakdown, the schedule and the Moc Bai crossing guide.

Option 2: fly to Kuala Lumpur

Da Lat's airport, Lien Khuong, is about 30 km south of the city and roughly 45 minutes by road. Cam Ranh, near Nha Trang, is two and a half to three hours away and carries far more international traffic, so it is often the more practical departure point even with the drive.

Malaysia admits most Western passports without a visa for a short stay, which makes Kuala Lumpur the simplest air option. You fly out, spend a night or two, and fly back into Vietnam on a fresh entry.

The catch is that this is a multi day trip, not a day trip. Two flights, at least one night of accommodation, and airport transfers on both ends usually add up to more than the private car to Moc Bai. It is worth it when you want the time away, or when you cannot face a 600 km drive.

Routes and fares from Lien Khuong change with the season. Check what is actually flying before you build a plan around it.

Option 3: fly to Bangkok

The same structure as Kuala Lumpur, with a longer flight and a bigger city at the other end. Most Western passports enter Thailand without a visa for a short stay, which keeps the paperwork minimal.

People choose Bangkok over Kuala Lumpur for reasons that have nothing to do with the border: they know the city, they want the few days, or the flight times suit them better. As a pure visa run, it is the most expensive of the three and the least efficient. As a reason to leave the country for a few days, it is the pleasantest.

The state fee versus what an agent charges

Every option involves at least two payments: the state fee, which goes to a government, and the service charge, which goes to whoever does the work. Keeping them apart is the difference between understanding your bill and guessing at it.

Charge State fee Our price What the difference covers
Cambodia visa at Bavet About 30 to 35 USD at the counter, paid in cash 1,100,000 VND (about 43 USD) The fixer at the gate, the form, and the queue
Vietnam 90-day e-visa, single entry 25 USD official fee 2,400,000 VND (about 94 USD) Application, document check, entry port check, re-application if refused
Vietnam 90-day e-visa, multiple entry 50 USD official fee 3,100,000 VND (about 122 USD) Same as above

If you would rather pay the government directly, you can. The e-visa is applied for on the official portal by anyone, and the Cambodia visa can be bought at the counter yourself. What you are buying from us is the port check and the person standing at the gate. If a document is wrong, we find out before you drive 300 km, not at the counter.

USD conversions use 25,500 VND per dollar, the same reference rate as the booking form.

Which one should you choose

You want it over with

Take the private car to Moc Bai. One day, and you sleep at home.

You are travelling alone or as a pair and watching the money

The sleeper bus and car combination is the cheapest way to reset a stay.

There are three or four of you

The private car is already cheaper per head than the bus, and it leaves when you do.

You would like a few days somewhere else

Fly. Kuala Lumpur is the simpler paperwork, Bangkok is the better trip.

Your visa expires in the next few days

The land run, because it does not depend on flight availability. See the timing guide.

What all three have in common

However you leave, you need the same thing to get back in: a Vietnam e-visa that names the entry port you will actually use. Fly into Tan Son Nhat and the e-visa must say Tan Son Nhat. Drive through Moc Bai and it must say Moc Bai. This is the single most common reason a run fails, and it is decided before you leave the city.

Your passport needs enough validity remaining and blank pages available. Both are checked at the counter and neither can be fixed there.

And the return stamp is a separate event from the exit. Read it before you walk away from the officer who applied it. The entry port guide covers the failure in detail.

Questions people ask

Is it cheaper to fly or drive?

Driving, unless you were going to take the trip anyway. Two flights, a night of accommodation and airport transfers usually cost more than a private car to Moc Bai and back.

Can I do a visa run from Da Lat in one day?

Only by land. The Moc Bai loop fits in a day with an early start. Both flight options need at least one night abroad.

Do I need a visa for Malaysia or Thailand?

Most Western passports enter both without one for a short stay. Check your own nationality, because it is not universal, and it is not the same rule for both countries.

What if I fly back into a different airport?

Your e-visa names the port you enter through. If you land somewhere else, the visa does not cover it. Decide the airport before you apply.

Is the Laos border an option from Da Lat?

Technically yes, practically no. The Lao crossings are around 700 km away, so the drive is longer than the Cambodia run and gains you nothing.
